According to the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022, Greece ranks
44th among 132 countries globally, having climbed three places
from 47th in 2021; however, it ranks 38th among the 48 countries
of the high-income group and 28th among the 39 countries of its
region group, Europe.

In absolute terms, it stands at 53% of the score of the country with
the best international performance in innovation. Greece’s im-
provement in the international ranking is due to its performance
on the Innovation Outputs sub-index, where it climbed 11 places,
from 60th in 2021 to 49th in 2022, highlighting stepped-up efforts
to more rapidly develop the Greek innovation ecosystem. On the
Innovation Inputs sub-index, Greece fell five places (from 39th to
44th), mainly due to the decrease in the Institutions pillar and the
Human Capital and Research pillar.
